![]() Lake Maggiore in the Province of Novara The lake district is ringed by a crown of mountains, the central jewel in the Alps being Monte Rosa. Rising to over 4000metres, it lies a mere 50kms as the crow flies from the shores of Lake Maggiore. All round the Lake itself, the morphology of the surrounding hills and mountains has created interesting pockets of local folklore and traditions, still relatively untouched by modern times. The entire area offers interesting possibilites for trekking and excursions through the mountain valleys: the Val Formazza with the Toce waterfalls; the Val Vigezzo, known as the painters' valley; the Val Anzasca which leads to the exquisite Walser village of Macugnaga and the Valle Antrona, sprinkled with sparkling mountain lakes. ![]() The Lake Maggiore seen from the Castello Tucked in amongst these natural jewels is the wilderness area of the Val Grande National Park, the largest wilderness area in central Europe. A drive round the Lake, justly famous for the world reknown Borromean Islands, lying just off the town of Stresa, reveals just how many other magnificent attractions are to be found in this area. Sumptuous villas and beautifully laid out gardens, dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries line the piemontese shores of the Lake and no trip would be complete without a visit to the gardens of Villa Taranto, the Borromeo Islands, and Villa San Remigio. The towns of Stresa and Verbania are also particularly interesting. Lake Orta, just west of the Lake Maggiore, is a further jewel in the crown of this exquisite corner of Italy. The main town, Omegna, sits at the head of the Lake, looking down onto the glorious island of San Giulio and the fascinating pedestrian-only town of Orta itself. From Omegna it is possible to proceed to the Val Strona, well known for handworked wood artifacts, including Collodi's Pinocchio and for the manifacture of brass wind instruments. The hills around Novara produce excellent wines and the entire area is a food lovers paradise. |
