These are the promises that the seagull Kengah manages to snatch in dying from a big black cat named Zorba. Kengah had just dived into the ocean to catch some herring with her companions, but when she pulled her head out she found herself alone in that immensity.

The rest of the flock had flown away and the sea was an expanse of oil that would soon asphyxiate it by penetrating among the feathers and plugging all the pores. With enormous effort she takes off, she reaches the mainland, but falls on a balcony in Hamburg.

And it is here that she meets the cat Zorba to whom she entrusts the egg she is about to lay. But how will Zorba keep faith with the three promises made, in particular that of teaching how to fly? You will certainly need the help of your friends Diderot, Colonel egretary, but also someone else's ...

The Chilean writer, through this story-tale touches on themes very dear to him: he starts from the love for nature threatened by the destructive and indifferent attitudes of man and continues with the solidarity and generosity of disinterested and altruistic beings.

But perhaps the thing that is most striking is the message of hope that transpires through recognizing man not only the role of polluter and responsible for disasters, but also that of aid and indispensable contribution to the balance of nature in danger.

A sweet and strong story at the same time, certainly suitable for children, but capable of capturing the attention of adults who are sensitive to the themes of nature and those of solidarity. A solidarity without borders and barriers. Or perhaps it would be more correct to speak of barriers that can be crossed with a bit of commitment and good will..

Sometimes learning to fly is a lesson that comes from those you least expect. And let's not forget: “Only those who dare to fly fly”.
